Vesak Day

Yesterday was Vesak Day. It was a Sunday. So, today is the replacement holiday in Singapore.

Vesak Day is a Buddhist holy day. According to traditions, celebrates three major events: the birth of Prince Siddharta, the attainment of Buddhahood by the Prince and the Parinibhana (pass on) of the Buddha.

Personally, the holy day is our chance to reflect back on what we have been so far in accordance to the moral teachings of the Buddha.

The most basic of the moral code is called Pancasila, the five precepts. They are basically abstaining from harming living things, from taking what is not given, from sexual misconduct, from false speech, from intoxicating drugs or drink.
