I have been enjoying delivering prepared speeches for the past ten months and I agreed that it was pay-back time. I did not know that I would be gaining much more by participating as appointment holder in meetings. After attending the evaluation workshop conducted by Albert Chan, I started my debut as evaluator. It was fun as I learnt different aspects of communication including the listening, observation and delivering impromptu speech skills. The first evalution I did was very challenging and fearful. I worried about many things, about offending the speaker, accuracy of evaluation, not having things to say, and many others. As usual, the butterflies came back and challenge my decision. More and more I got used to the feeling and I improved my evaluation skill.

On the second year in the club, I took up the challenge to be VP Education. Even before the term commenced, I started club visiting just to get to know other Toasmasters. With evaluation skill, my visit was welcomed everywhere. I got to know many new friends. I learnt to give favour so that I could get favour back from those people to visit our club as evaluators. When I became President, I shared the visitation routine with Seow Hwee Ling as VP Education. I felt so proud when I announced that I came from Cheng San.

In April, then Area Governor (AG) S1 DTM Stanley Goh asked me if I was interested in serving as AG. At that time, I was also serving as Assistant Area Z1 Governor when Marshall Lee was serving as Area Z1 Governor. I thought I wanted to focus on attaining my Advanced Toastmaster Silver (ATM-S) the next that I rejected the offer. I thought my live had been so busy with Cheng San TMC that I wanted to slow down and to spend more time with family. I thought that was all there was to Toastmasters. Little did I know that more challenges and discoveries awaited me few months after that.

Just before the new term started for me to become the Immediate Past President (IPP), DTM Patricia Lum (the newly elected Division S Governor then) called me to serve as her AG. She told me she needed my help to cover Area S5. With much hesitation as Cheng San TMC was not in S5, I accepted the challenge and I became Area S5 Governor. The reason was also that I completed my ATM-S just enough time to contribute another point to Cheng San TMC.

I started the area with 4 clubs. With the help of then Division Advisor DTM Kan Kin Fung, we managed to charter a new club, Woodlands TMC few months later. Being involved in division provided me with more activities and definitely more fun in Toastmasters education and leadership journey. I was involved in various Area, Division and District activities as organisers, supporters and participants. Having had to visit more clubs than ever, it opened up my horizon even wider on how our people were running their clubs. Those were really different experiences than what we could gain from our own club alone.

While serving as AG, I managed to put in time to complete my Advanced Toastmaster Gold (ATM-G) qualification. Along the way, I obtained my Competent Leader (CL) qualification after serving the VP Education term. I also completed the Advanced Leader (AL) qualification after completing my AG term and High Performance Leadership program. It means that I was eligible to apply to become Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) just three years after I became a Toastmaster.

Along the way, I was actively involved in setting up of various clubs in different locations. I took part in various speech contests and delivered speeches in various occasions as District Official (Area Governor). I think I have grown up quite considerably in those three years. After my AG term, I took on the appointment as Assistant Division S Governor when DTM Stanley Goh served as Division S Governor 2004/2005.

Involving and participating fully in the Toastmasters in both the communication and leadership tracks were the best way to get the most from my membership as a Toastmaster. I thanked all members and mentors for providing me the chance to learn and grow.

Sincerely,
Sugeng Sanusi (Shi Song Jun), DTM
Past Area S5 Governor 2003/2004
google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

Everytime I had to do one, I always felt very nervous. The butterflies in my tummy just did not want to co-operate. I thought maybe it was in-born and I had to live with the butterflies. I also remembered people telling me that I spoke very fast during presentation. I thought that was also in me to speak very fast. I did not know that all those could be changed with some efforts. I did not think much and just followed the flow.

I first understood what Toastmasters is all about in 1999 when I attended a public speaking course conducted by People Associations for the grassroots leaders. I started to realize there was something I could do to improve my skill in this area. I heard of the term Toastmasters before but I did not pay much attention due to wrong perception. I archieved the name in my mind so that I could find a club when I had the time. The time did not come.

When I joined a new company in January 2000, I had to attend the company's orientation. In the program, Wesley Wong (our Past President) came to introduce Lucent Toastmasters Club with meetings at Chai Chee office. I was so interested. There are few problems, though. I stayed in Yishun (North). My office was in Science Park (South West). The meeting was at Chai Chee (South East). It made a perfect triangle on top of Singapore map. For the time being, I kept the tought in my mind again with the intention to find a club when I had the time. The time did not come.

2001 came and I was still struggling with my public speaking. I was sitting in front of the computer in office one day when I had some free time. I thought I would try searching for Toastmasters Singapore in Google. Interestingly, I came across the Clus Hoping List maintained by DTM Augustine Lee (Past District Governor and Past International Director). The website is still alive until now. I was amazed. Looking through the list, I short-listed few clubs nearer to my place. I thought I would start visiting them one-by-one to decide which club to join. But, I was too busy. I put the idea in my mind to do when I had more time. The time did not come.

Finally in May 2001, I told myself I had to do something. Looking through the list again, I short-listed few clubs nearby my home, Cheng San, Ang Mo Kio, Teck Ghee and Nee Soon East. I thought Nee Soon East should be ideal as it is the nearest among all. However, the nearest meeting date was at Cheng San. And, I knew I did not want to wait further. Besides, Cheng San Toastmasters Club (TMC) website was the most impressive (thanks to then webmaster Albert Chan). I called the listed VP Membership (Roy Yeo), but no answer. I then called VP Public Relations (Eugene Tan). He was very friendly and invited me to come to the next meeting on 9 May 2010.

I was so excited and anxious at the same time when the time came for me to visit Cheng San CC. I did not know what to expect and I realized I knew nobody except Eugene (through phone). I found the sign below the staircase leading to the meeting room at the second floor. The moment I opened the door I still remembered vividly Simon Low warmly welcomed me at the door. I knew he did not know me before and I believed Eugene did not inform him about my coming. But the warmth and the atmosphere of the room were so intoxicating, I really felt at home. He started introducing me to other members and then Club President Lawrence Lim.

The meeting ended at 9pm to be continued with Annual General Meeting (AGM). I was told politely that I could stay if I signed the membership on that day. I was so attracted with the club that I wanted very much to see what would happen during the AGM. Then VP Membership Roy Yeo quickly brought me to the CC office to register my membership so that I could sit in the AGM. When we returned, the meeting had started with report from President. The membership was reported at 47 with my entry that day. After that, I saw Christopher Goh (Past President) came up as the Returning Officer to lead the Executive Committe (Exco) election. Wesley Wong was elected unanimously to be the next President.

Under the mentorship of Simon Low (then VP Education), I booked my first project speech on that night for the next meeting. My first project was not easy to prepare although I was only supposed to talk about myself. I spoke about the four A's at home. Just before my turn, I really regretted my decision to join the club and agreed to deliver my first project the next meeting. This time the butterflies did not give me any chance. I could feel the earth shaking and my legs turning into jelly. I almost could not walk from my seat to the lectern only located five steps away. I was not sure why the world suddenly turned so fast that I thought I might have to cancel my speech due to medical condition. Nevertheless, I forced myself and started speaking. I could still feel the ground tremor while speaking. The 5-minute speech felt like five hours. Finally, I limped back to my seat after the speech. I thought that was the worst speech Cheng San TMC members must have heard in history. I was lucky as the evaluator was so kind and offered so many words of encouragement sincerely. I was overjoyed and decided to embark the journey seriously.

The following one year was the best time for me. I started in full gear with new project speech in every meeting. I completed Competent Toastmaster qualification (CTM) in 5 months and Advanced Toastmaster Bronze (ATM-B) qualification in another 5 months. I volunteered to be VP Education in July 2002 with Sheeja Pillai as the President. The term started with a huge drop in membership due to the 911 incident causing economy crisis afffecting our members. We lost many members due to this. Our membership base shrinked to danger level (below 20). Meeting attendance was also very low to the extend that we did not have enough people for complete meeting appointments. With resolute and able leadership of Sheeja, we insisted in starting meeting on time and continued to march on to keep the club alive.

After few months as President, Sheeja stepped down and resigned from the club due to personal reason. Economy was tough and her mother's health at that time was not too promising as well. We had to accept the loss and re-form the Exco. After an eventful Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), the members gave me the honour to be the next President and I was so lucky to have the service of Seow Hwee Ling as the VP Education for the remaining half year term.

With the full support of Cheng San CCC Chairman, Leslie Yong, BBM (then Cheng San CCMC Chairman), the club managed to raise the club membership and meeting qualities all the way to achieve President Distinguished Club status for the term 2002/2003 with nine goals. We may have achieved this distinction before, but to me it was really meaningful as we struggled and succeeded in the effort post-911. We recruited many enthusiastic members who have contributed very much to the glory of the club until today. I am always indebted to people like Nancy Lim, Cliff Teo, DTM Kevin Ong, Richard Yin, DTM Manivannan, Henry Tan (current CCMC Chairman), Patrick Tan, Roger Hoo, Suanne Hoo and many others. They supported fully and wholeheartedly the team effort to revive the club. Our membership shot up to match the level we enjoyed when I first joined the club two years back. Until today achieving President Distinguished Club has become a tradition. We obtained the status for the past seven years in the running.

Looking back, I saw that we have a healthy club rejuvenation in place. The tradition is continued by all the Presidents after that: Seow Hwee Ling, Simon Leong, Hsieh Cheng Lin, Ronald Lim, Esther Lim, Goh Shu Ling. I am looking forward to the successful completion of Daniel Kwek's Presidency. I wish all the success to Cheng San Toastmasters Club for the 20th anniversary celebration.

Sincerely,
Sugeng Sanusi (Shi Song Jun), DTM
Past President 2003

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

Earthquake is a sudden shaking of the earth. The vibrations vary in magnitude from mild to very serious and destructive. Earthquakes by themselves are rarely disastrous. It is usually the secondary events that trigger disasters, such as building collapse, fires and tsunamis.

The exact time and place when an Earthquake will occur normally cannot be predicted. Using historical and past data, seismic agencies around the world can compile and predict earthquake within a certain period of time and over a large area.

Earthquake after-effects are normally avoidable with better building construction, safety systems, early warning and evacuation planning. We just need to be more vigilance and plan for the worse. With strong infrastructures, We also need to prepare the people so that they know what to do when tremors occur.

It is important to stay calm and not panic if you are indoor. Stay away from items made of glass or anything that can fall and hurt you. It may also be advisable to take cover under a table. Do not use a naked light just in case there is a gas leak. Do not use the lift if you are in a building. Use the staircase, instead. Evacuation is only necessary when there are visible signs of structural defects (new cracks, etc).

If you are outdoors, remain in the open until the tremors stop. Try to stay away from buildings and overhead electrical cables. Try to avoid trees as well if possible.

Once the shaking is over, check your surroundings for injured people and dangerous conditions. Turn off gas only if you smell gas. If you are trapped, try not to move too much to conserve your energy and not to kick up dust. Tap on pipe or wall or use whistle to alert rescuers or others. Shout only when it is really necessary as you need to conserve whatever energy and strength you still have. You won't know how long you have to wait before help comes around.

Experiencing natural disaster can be very stressful and depressing. Apart from handling rescue effort, it is also important to take care of the psychological aspect of the victims. Another consideration also includes the health and epidemic issues of the quake-affected areas. The effects will be felt soon if not well taken care early. These areas are normally neglected when everyone is busy with rescue and relief efforts.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

So, what is Buddha Board? It is also called an aquadoodle. It is simply a special canvas board using marker filled with water. Using the water marker, you can draw whatever you like on the special canvas. The drawing will appear but fade and go away slowly leaving you with a blank canvas again.

The concept is very useful and practical both for children and adult. The children love to play with the board as it is easy to draw with water marker and the canvas will self-clean. For parents, there is no worry of cleaning up and it is very eco-friendly.

For adult, the Buddha Board can be used as an expression of art that will disappear momentarily. It is all about living in the moment. We have to live in the NOW. It is effortless for children, but as an adult we need to practice and train the NOW habit.

Life is stressful for many people. We think about the uncertain futures. We worry about what is coming along. We also regret of what happened in the past, both the near past and the far past. Letting go the mind from the past and future and keep reminding ourselves to live in present and focus on now is a good idea.

From the Buddha Board, interested people can explore further the concept of Buddhism. In actual fact, the Buddha Board was developed from Zen Buddhism. Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism. It is also called Chan in Chinese. Chan is derived from the Sanskrit Dhyana which means meditation.

Looking at the function of Buddha Board that encourages living in the present, it is very similar to the practice of meditation that also cultivates the mind with continuous awareness. Zen's emphasis is on experiential wisdom. It means we have to experience the wisdom and awakening, rather than relying on theorical knowledge and study of religious texts alone.

Most of the awakenings in Zen Buddhism happened with unpredicted twists. The enlightenment of the Zen followers happen in very simple, mundane settings and sometimes only realized long after the events have passed. It is interesting to pay attention that it can happen to anyone anytime. We just need to let your mind be ready and not have any prejudice thoughts. The same thing is also applicable when you are drawing with Buddha Board. Let your mind play along on the canvas. The realization may just appear and happen unnoticed.

I don't claim that playing with Buddha Board alone can lead to enlightenment. However, Buddha Board can be a good starting point for people who would like to start meditation or cultivating the mind with conscious awareness by watching the ever changing thoughts in the our mind.

May all sentient beings be happy.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

We are a prototype, the future model of clubs in the Rotary world. The main attraction is the cyber meeting we conduct as compared to physical meetings the ordinary clubs are having weekly.

Our members are supposed to be cyber-literate. It means that we don't have phobia handling computer and the internet. It means that we understand the difference between forum and chat, between email and website.

Ideally, we should be very familiar or at least comfortable with the cyber things. However, far from ideal, the reality is many members still have phobia touching computer, not to mention on using the internet.

Theoretically, many things can be done through cyber meeting. The fact is people are still more comfortable having face-to-face meeting, sending fax instead of email. This is quite an irony.

Perhaps, we should add in a test for new members before we admit them in. Ask them to go online, register the user id and post an introduction on the forum. Only after satisfying these will we them induct them to the club.

At least with this barrier taken out, cyber attendance will not be a problem anymore.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

Most of the time, the bloggers are not aware of this. They just write whatever they feel like publishing online. Only until someone notifies them that they realize that they are brushing with the law.

It is not so simple to do this within the legal framework. Most of the time, the bloggers just put down whatever comes to mind. These may include something the legal thinks inappropriate.

Frankly, I lost a bit of enthusiasm when I read the news. Not that I intend to write something unlawful, but rather I don't want to worry unnecessarily on these things.

After stopping for sometime, I have decided to do a comeback. I think I will just pen down my ideas and not worry too much. Besides, I an not any celebrity and I doubt that this page will receive more than a handful of visitors.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

It is a place where there are activities for residents. It also serves as resident mobilization centre.

Today I took part in Healthy Lifestyle Outing organised by Sembawang CC. I used to take part in this kind of activities, but stopped for at least a year due to various commitments.

Today we visited the Chinese Garden. There is nothing glamorous, but with a piece of bread, a bottle of water and lucky draw costing S$2 departing at 7am, participants found it worthwhile. Besides, it is healthier compared to people who woke up late and did not do simple exercises.

On why I said it is a centre to mobilize residents, we can just take a look at turnout for today. There are at least 800 people with no less than 17 buses taking part. This is definitely a very important phenomena to notice.

I think this is one area that Singapore has done very well. Other than healthier lifestyle, it also fosters family bonding and cultivates good habit of waking up early.

Overall, I am satisfied and I would definitely encourage my family to take part more in the future.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

I also noticed the same trend happening in Indonesia. Starting from pre-school age (kindergarten), children were attending enrichment classes teaching the subject.

I have tried myself to learn the technique. Being a math geek when I was younger, I found it very interesting and useful. The method really simplifies the addition and substraction without using pen and paper.

I don't know how it would affect the performance in school. Either it will motivate the children further when they can handle the subject or the children may feel overwhelmed with additional pressure on studying especially if they already have few other enrichment courses to attend.

No matter how the result maybe, it is important to have a balance coupled with individual's interest.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

It falls on the last Friday of May. It is a way by government to encourage companies to release employers to release the employees to go home earlier so that they can have dinner with family members. Today is such a day.

There is no special arrangement required. For my company, we were allowed to go home at 5pm. This is nothing special as people starting work from 8pm would have gone home by that time. Howeve, it is a good gesture from the company.

On my way home I say my co-worker. She was in a rush. I complimented her as a good mother and housewife rushing home to prepare dinner for the family to eat together. But to my suprise, she told me she was late for her appointment with friends at Orchard Road.

Well, there are many ways to celebrate any events. For her, perhaps, that was the best, since she might not have the chance to see and meet up with her friends as her work would only be finished after 6pm.

The whole idea to have such a day is very good, indeed. Finally, it is up to the individual to decide how best to utilise it without neglecting the true meaning of the special day.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

The message is basically similar. Our nature is not the same as before. The natural food that we have does not have enough nutrients to supply and to give us the necessary nutrients to build and maintain a healthy body.

To stay healthy we have to supplement our food. Of course there are other things like exercise, stress management, healthy mental state, etc., etc. we need to take care.

In a sense I agree, but only to a certain extent. No doubt we have to supplement, but taking in natural food, especially the non-meat source is equally important. From the start of mankind, human has been living out of the nature. Health supplement is a relatively new intention. I believe synchronising our life with nature is equally important.

In conclusion, lead a healthy lifestyle, eat sensibly and take enough supplement and your health should be in a tip-top condition.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

Other factors will come in later.

The same thing is happening to me as well. As parents we would want to provide the best to our children. So, this was the first step I did.

Along the way other factors come in, the proximity, the co-curricular activities, pastoral care, teacher's commitment, etc.

Primary one being the first time a child go for full session study can be quite stressfull. Besides, the need to wake up early in the morning to catch up with the school bus and to start the school early can be quite a difficult routine to adjust to.

Based on there two factors alone, the most important thing that matters is only one, the proximity. Then, how about academic that was supposed to be the most important?

Somehow, I noticed it is actually up to the child to put in the hardwork and discipline to be successful. No doubt the school and environment play a sold here, but ultimately it is the individual that will determine the success.

With this understanding, I realise I don't have to do much. Just find the nearest neighbour school with not-too-bad academic achievement and my children should be alright. I hope this is a wise choice.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

In order to achieve the objectives, there are two important things to be achieved by a club.

The first is attendance at weekly meeting to build the fellowship among members. The second is the membership classification rule. It means that the club will only admit professionals/leaders from all professions up to a maximum of 10% of the membership. It means there cannot be more than 10% of members with same profession.

Personally I think the weekly attendance is the most difficult, but it is not impossible. It is even more difficult for busy professionals. This is where the Rotary E-Club of 3310 comes is. Instead of weekly meeting, we meet over the cyber. It means we discuss matters and interact with each other through our online forum. However, we are unique. We always have once a month physical meeting. This is very important as it will further foster a stronger bonding among members. It can become the catalyst to boost the bonding and fellowship.

No doubt we are still a prototype club, we are pioneering many 'firsts' in the Rotary world. I will discuss the others in the future.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

It is not that maid word not sound nice, but there are too many terms used by various languages that the government find it necessary to officially adopt a name to use for this purpose.

With the policy to have a good balance of quality workforce and to satisfy resource intensive requirement for certain sectors, Singapore has to control the number of maid allowed in the country.

The most obvious is the requirement of the employer to pay monthly levy. In most cases the levy is more than the maid's salary. Imagine how much more the maid would receive if there were no levy. Of course, it is not always straight-forward and the relationship is not always linear.

There is also a S$5000 deposit as guarantee that the maid does not run away and will return to the origin country after serving the stipulated period of work permit timing. She is a bright student from Indonesia currently studying Information Technology in Taiwan.

With her good academic results, she managed to enter local prestigious university reading English. But half-way through the university, she left Indonesia to study in Taiwan. Now alone in foreign land she is short of money and needs to find a decent work anywhere as long as it is not back to Indonesia.

I can understand her reason not to go back to Indonesia. I can also understand that there is something more that she did not reveal. It does not seem so simple.

She even proposed to come to Singapore as nanny or domestic helper while waiting for any suitable job. Personally I do not think this is a good idea as there are other things involved. Also, there is a sense of urgency to quickly leave Taiwan in the tone.

As a Buddhist, I should not worry too much on unnecessary things. What I can do now, perhaps, is to offer her some ways to tide over the current crisis and pursue her dreams.

I have no idea now. It consists of the setup, sequence, 9-gamut and sequence again.

The Setup is used to clear any psychological reversals that might hinder the problems from being resolved.

The Sequence consists of tapping the 12 to 14 points. They are inner eye brow, side eye, below eye, nose, chin, collar bone, arm pit, (bellow nipple), side of thumb, side of index finger, side of middle finger, (side of ring finger), side of small finger and karate chop.

The 9-gamut consists of nine tappings sequence with eye movement and humming to improve the left and right brian coordination.

Overall, this is all there is to EFT. I have stumbled upon the term few times in the part, but I have never given any attention to it.

It was not until end of last year that my friend introduced it to me. He told me that I can get results within minutes, even seconds, which is extraordinarily quick compared to other techniques that I have encountered before. It seems like too good to be true.

With a bit skepticism, I went to the website www.emofree.com to take a look. The appearance looked ordinary. But, upon reading the introduction, I was intrigued to try it out. I downloaded the free manual and started reading.

The theory is simple. Your emotional problem can be traced to the disturbance of the energy flow in your body's meridians.

The technique is simply to tap on the affected points. Our body has few hundreds meridian points. But we only need to tap on one of the points along the same meridian. Since there are only 14 main meridians, we only need to tap 14 points to get rid of almost all of the emotional problems.

Of course it is not that simple. There is something called aspect. A simple emotional problem may have more than one aspect associated with it. So, we need to discover all the aspects and tap them away.

I have personally tried and tested the EFT in numerous occasions. Majority of the problems were cleared within a short period of time.

Please feel free to contact me if you want to discuss

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

It was a Sunday. So, today is the replacement holiday in Singapore.

Vesak Day is a Buddhist holy day. They are basically abstaining from harming living things, from taking what is not given, from sexual misconduct, from false speech, from intoxicating drugs or drink.

The principles seem very simple, but in actual fact we need to be mindful just to follow the five

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

This is in theory. The actual fact is that it takes more than simple effort to eventually build a big enough network to produce sizeable income to reach financial freedom. This is the magic phrase that people in the industry are talking about.

The new breakthrough in the field is using the internet to build the network. From my experience in the past few years, I found out the gems and wisdoms of building a successful internet network marketing.

1. You need a strong and powerful company with desirable products that give you attractive rewards for your efforts. The company also needs powerful marketing systems in place with high conversion ratio.

2. You need good quality supply of unique leads with reasonable price. You need these to feed your network for growth.

3. You need good strategies in your network positioning to get cash out as soon as possible for the system to breakeven.

4. You need to have multiple streams of income on the premise that each must be self-funding.

5. You need to start with system that can give you back money fairly quickly to boost up your own confidence before embarking on middle-term and long-term systems that would be the eventual cash-cow.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

The object of analysis includes anything with price trend movement. For example, stock price, commodity price, real estate price, etc.

I was told there are currently few thousand techniques categorized as technical analysis. This is a tremendously huge body of knowledge. Imagine the time it would take if someone were to take the time to learn everything, not counting the additional time it would require to master each individual technique.

Fortunately for the market professionals, mastery of few techniques alone might be enough to profit from the market. This is not to say that we can randomly pick and choose techniques that we personally like.

In a good system, synergy of the few techniques might be enough to build a very comprehensive technical analysis system. People generally have the misunderstanding that the more techniques they use, the more powerful will be the system they are building. This is far from the truth. What we need is few techniques that complement each other to cover the weaknesses of the others.

In my short span of time dealing with technical analysis, I was introduced to a powerful combination of the following:

Elliot Wave
Candlestick
Simple Moving Average Channels
RSI
Stochastic Oscillator
MACD

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

People sign up to become members with various reasons: the privileges, the prestige, the opportunity to serve humanity, the fellowship, the networking and many other reasons.

After the novelty of being a Rotarian rubs off, after people start to realize and understand the obligations, after they go through the processes, some of the new members will start to realize and think that maybe Rotary is not for them. Or, rather, they are not cut out to be a Rotarian.

Analyzing the real reasons behind we should be able to synthesize many theories. However, personally I think the main reason is the failure to participate.

I heard my mentors in Rotary said this few times, "Enjoying by participating." I think there should be some truth to this just like any old wisdoms that people like to quote.

I have noticed that those who seldom attend the meetings, let alone participate in activities, are the ones who are most likely to call it quit.

To understand a little bit more deeply, there is another wisdom, "What's in it for me?" (wiifm). When there is no benefit and compelling reasons for members to attend, almost certainly we can be sure that the membership retention will suffer.

Again, this can be like chicken and egg kind of situation. Which one should come first? Satisfying members' interest first for them to participate or for them to come in actively to satisfy their own interest.

Of course, this is a matter of priority for the club's Board of Director to decide. I guess the answer to this is to have a balance for both sides.

I don't claim that I have a solution for this. I just would like to throw some alternatives. In the first place, we need to set the correct mindset and perspective of new members when they join the club. Apart from the privileges, the obligations have to be spelt out clearly.

At the end of the day, it is the individual that matters. No matter how wonderful we make the club to be, if the attitude is already negative, I an afraid there is nothing much we can do.

Have a happy networking

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

The blog was written complete with few pictures of the lady in action.

The articles was alright. But I was disturbed with the fact that all the comments online only talked about how fierce the lady and the retribution she would get when her own children were asked by the school to go for the tin donation.

The whole issue started when the schools implemented the idea to ask the students to go out and collect donation in order to build and nurture the philanthropy in them. I think the children have a choice of what to do for this. But since doing tin donation is the easiest, nearly everyone would choose to do this.

Being charitable is good, but learning to be charitable by begging is another very different thing. I am not sure what is expected to be achieved from the whole exercise. But one thing is for sure, the children would just go out and beg until the required time is up.

At the end of the day, we may be nurturing a whole new young generation of people who only know how to beg and request for money when they need them, instead of finding legal ways to create the money out of their creativity.

This is what I call Tin Donation Mentality.

google_ad_client = "pub-6543198996030621";

At 10am, the taxi would prefer the CTE as there is no ERP charge and it is supposed to be an 'expressway'.

The few times we traveled the CTE after 10am, there were accidents that caused the cars to crawl in low speed. The normal 45-minute side would take more than one hour.

Today, for a change, despite the fact that it was half past ten in the morning, I asked the driver not to go through CTE. He was not sure whether my request was logical, but he hesitantly followed my suggestion with a disclaimer that he would not guarantee if there would not be any traffic-jam at Ang Mo Kio. I told him not to worry as I wanted to try the route at that hour.

The journey was surprisingly smooth. Although there were many traffic lights, we reached KK in 20 minutes. This is the best record we have for the past five months. The driver was equally surprised.

I think, at the end of the day, it does not matter whether or not it is an expressway. What matters is the traffic pattern and most importantly, your luck at that moment. It is a nice place with friendly people. We registered Aaron there and left him for the full session.

Aaron seems to like the place. He has made friends with some of the children there. Today, there were only a handful of children, I think less than ten in total.

Beside toys and books, I could also see computers, PlayStation and X-Box. The multi-sensory room is impressive. It is like cinema with lighting effects. The room is padded everywhere, so it is safe for children.

My wife told me Adam was also there. Aditya was also attending the sessions there, but he was not around today.
